This tutorial will teach you the easiest and fastest method to creating a grid pattern.

1. Create a new document (http://members.skill-club.com/BullseyePimp/Tutorial%20Images/Grid/Images/1.jpg). Any size over 10x10 will work perfectly. Make the background contents White. When the new document is created, create a new layer (http://members.skill-club.com/BullseyePimp/Tutorial%20Images/Grid/Images/2.jpg). Then, grab the Rectangular Marquee Tool, hold shift, and drag to create a small, square selection, as shown in the screenshot below.

2. With the selection made, go to Edit->Stroke (http://members.skill-club.com/BullseyePimp/Tutorial%20Images/Grid/Images/4.gif). Make the width small, such as 1 or 2 px, and set the location to center. You should now have a small, black box outline. Do not deselect yet.

3. Next, go to Image->Trim... (http://members.skill-club.com/BullseyePimp/Tutorial%20Images/Grid/Images/6.jpg); make it based on the Top Left Pixel Corner, and set it to Trim Away the Top, Left, Bottom, and Right. The image should now be a lot smaller. Do not deselct yet. In the image shown below, I have zoomed in 3 times the normal size, so that you could view the results better. What you have should look similar to the picture below.

4. Now, with the selection still active, go to Edit->Define Pattern... (http://members.skill-club.com/BullseyePimp/Tutorial%20Images/Grid/Images/8.gif) name the pattern whatever suits you; in this case, I've named it "Grid".

5. You have succesfully made the pattern! Now, you must learn to use it. Select the paint bucket tool (it may appear under the Gradient Tool; in this case, just hold Shift and press G and it will switch back to the Paintbucket Tool), set the fill to pattern, then click the tab to bring down the list of patterns, and find the grid pattern yo had just created from the steps above. Click here for a reference, if needed. (http://members.skill-club.com/BullseyePimp/Tutorial%20Images/Grid/Images/10.gif) Then, create a new layer in the document you want the grid in, and click inside the view window to fill the layer with the grid pattern. You should now have a grid pattern filling your image!

TIP: If you want to add colors to the grid without making a new pattern with the colors, simply go to the channels pallette, create a new channel, and fill the new channel with the black and white grid pattern that you created in the above steps. Then, Hold Ctrl and click the channel. You should now have a grid like selection. Go back to the layers pallette, create a new layer, and fill the selection with a color of choice. After this, you could also invert the selection (Ctrl+Shift+I) and fill with another color of choice.
